KODACHI

木々の中に浮かんでいるような棚をデザインした。​
以前デザインしたTSUMIKIの断面を縦に伸ばして柱とし、
それを棚板のエッジに沿ってランダムに配置することで、​
棚の上に置かれた「もの」が柱によって見えたり隠れたりする…​
そんな森の中で「かくれんぼう」をしているような、​
楽しげな風景を生み出したいと考えた。

坂本龍一と隈研吾の対話、そして棚に込められた「祈り」

2007年、音楽家 坂本龍一が森林保全団体「more trees」を創立しました。2023年、坂本が逝去。その遺志を継ぎ、代表に就任したのが坂本の40年来の友人でもある建築家 隈研吾です。坂本が森に遺した静かな旋律は“おとづれ”（音連れ）となって隈のもとへ。音と建築、異なる表現で自然と向き合ってきたふたりは今なおかたちをかえて対話を続け、KODACHIという棚が生まれました。

「棚」という漢字の右側にある朋は「友、仲間」を意味します。それが「木」と組み合わさることで、棚は崖に沿い木材で棚のように張り出して作った道、「かけはし」を意味するものとなりました。

気候変動、森林破壊、生物多様性の喪失——かつてない速度で自然のバランスが崩れ、地球の未来が不確かさを増すいま、人と自然を、都市と森を、そして現在と未来をつなぐ「かけはし」となりたい。KODACHIは、そんな祈りを暮らしの片隅に息づかせていきます。

KODACHIから森へ：「植樹」という贈り物

KODACHIを１個ご購入につき、TREES FOR SAKAMOTOを通じて高知県梼原町の森に１本の苗木が植えられます。

梼原町は、坂本がmore treesを立ち上げた2007年当初から活動を共にしてきた、いわば原点の地。同時に、隈にとっても大切な場所です。90年代初頭にバブル経済がはじけ東京の仕事がすべてキャンセルされるという苦難の時期に隈は梼原町を訪れました。「梼原という特別な場所に呼びよせられ、惹きつけられ、木の使い方を学んでいった」（隈）木材を活かす独創的な建築スタイルが生まれるきっかけとなった梼原町は、建築家 隈研吾の原点でもあったのです。

坂本と隈、ふたりの森への祈りが重なる地に、KODACHIが１本の苗木を届けます。KODACHIを迎えてくださる使い手の祈りも織り交ぜて。

KODACHIから使い手へ：「想像力」を呼び覚ます

KODACHIは単にものを安置するための家具ではありません。使い手を遊びに誘い出し、「想像力」を呼び覚ます“小さな森”です。

天地や前後を入れ替えても美しく成立する柔軟さと、ランダムに配置された柱がもたらす遊び心。なにを置くか、どこに置くか、どう組み合わせるかといった使い手のアイディア。デザインと想像力を掛け合わせることで、多様な風景を立ち上げることができます。

10年前に隈がデザインをしたTSUMIKIのオマージュとなる三角の柱は、置かれたものを“見せる”だけでなく“隠す”役割も果たします。柱がつくる微妙な陰影や凸凹、色のゆらぎ、軽やかなリズム。そこで見え隠れするものたちからは息遣いが感じられ、ふとした瞬間に「もういいかい」「まあだだよ」という声が聞こえてくるかもしれません。

素材のこと：「合板」に込めた希い

KODACHIには北海道産のシナ合板を使用しています。シナノキは日本固有種で、北海道に多く自生しています。無垢材ではなく合板を選んだのは、木材の伸縮が少なく、棚などの組立式プロダクトに適しているため。また、TSUMIKIが無垢材を使い手仕事重視だったのに対し、KODACHIでは合板を選び機械加工を多く取り入れることで、熟練技術に過度に依存せず、若手や新たな人材が関わりやすいものづくりに挑戦しました。合板の選択には、ものづくりの担い手を育て、日本の豊かな木の文化を未来へ手渡していきたいという希いが込められています。

作り手のこと：滝澤ベニヤ（木材調達）、WOW（加工）

1936年創業の「滝澤ベニヤ」（北海道・芦別市）は、北海道産広葉樹の単板や合板を製造する老舗メーカーです。カラフルな再生紙を使った独自の合板「Paper-Wood」は世界的にも評価されています。「多品種少量生産」を理念に、北海道の多様な広葉樹を活かす合板づくりは、more treesの「多様性ある森づくり」と深く共鳴します。一貫した安全なノンホルマリン接着剤の使用や、職人の目による丁寧な検品と加工により、高品質で美しい合板を生み出しています。

旭川の家具メーカー「WOW」は、ドイツのシステム家具に影響を受けた精緻な技術と感性を備えた作り手集団です。「驚き」と「感動」を宿すものづくりで、日本有数の家具産地として知られる旭川の家具業界を牽引してきました。KODACHIの制作には、創業者・野原壽二氏ら熟練の技術者に加えて若手スタッフが参加。NC（数値制御）加工による高精度な加工と、人の手による繊細な仕上げを組み合わせ、木の魅力を丁寧に引き出しています。

かつて誰かが植えた木にあらたな命を吹き込み、もうひとつの命を未来の森へと託す。
木を活かし、木を育む、祈りの循環をKODACHIとともに。

【Designer’s Comment】 

I designed a shelf that seems to float among the trees.
Inspired by the triangular cross-section of my previous design TSUMIKI, I extended its form vertically to create upright elements as columns, placing those columns randomly along the edges of the shelf boards — allowing objects to be alternately revealed and hidden between them—as if playing hide-and-seek in a forest. That’s the joyful landscape I hoped to create.

【A Dialogue Between Ryuichi Sakamoto and Kengo Kuma—And the “Prayer” Embedded in the Shelf】 

In 2007, musician Ryuichi Sakamoto founded the forest conservation organization More Trees. In 2023, following his passing, architect Kengo Kuma—Sakamoto’s close friend of over 40 years—took on the role of representative to carry forward his legacy. The quiet melodies Sakamoto left behind in the forest  brought with it a sound — an otozure — that found its way to Kuma, like a soft visitation from the woods. Through their respective languages of sound and architecture, their dialogue with nature — and with each other —continues, taking new form. KODACHI, the shelf, was born from that quiet conversation. 

In Japanese, the character for “shelf” (棚) includes “朋”, which means “friend” or “companion.” Combined with “木” (tree), the character once referred to a wooden structure built along cliffs—a bridge.
Amidst accelerating climate change, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity, the balance of nature is crumbling, and the future of the Earth grows ever more uncertain.

KODACHI aspires to become a bridge — connecting people and nature, cities and forests, the present and the future. A quiet prayer that resides in the corners of our daily lives.

【From KODACHI to the Forest: A Gift of  Tree Planting】 

 With each purchase of a KODACHI, one sapling will be planted in the forests of Yusuhara, Kochi Prefecture, through TREES FOR SAKAMOTO — a place deeply meaningful to both Sakamoto and Kuma. 

Yusuhara has been involved with more trees since its founding by Sakamoto in 2007 — the symbolic birthplace of the organization’s earliest activities and spirit. It is also deeply meaningful to Kuma, who first visited the town in the early 1990s after the collapse of Japan’s bubble economy, when his Tokyo projects were cancelled. “There, I was drawn in and captivated by the special atmosphere of the place, and I learned how to work with wood,” he recalls. This experience led to his unique architectural style centered on timber — making Yusuhara the formative landscape for Kengo Kuma as an architect. 

KODACHI will deliver a sapling to this land where the prayers of Sakamoto and Kuma converge — joined by the prayers of the users who welcome the shelf into their homes.

【From KODACHI to the User:  Inviting Everyday Imagination】 

KODACHI is more than just  furniture for placing objects  — it’s a “little forest” that invites the user to play and stirs the imagination. 

Its flexible design is aesthetically complete regardless of orientation — flipped upside down or back to front. The randomly placed columns add a sense of play. What to place, where to place it, how to combine items — it’s up to the user’s imagination.  

 Through the interplay of design and imagination, KODACHI invites new landscapes to emerge. The triangular columns, a homage to TSUMIKI designed by Kuma ten years ago, serve to both reveal and conceal. The shadows and highlights cast by the triangular columns shift gently across the surface, creating soft textures and a quiet rhythm. As objects peek out from between the columns, the way they emerge and retreat evokes a quiet breath — as if the shadows and highlights lend them a subtle presence. You might just hear a whisper: “Ready or not, here I come.” 

  

【About the Material: A Wish Contained in “Plywood”】 

KODACHI uses Japanese linden plywood sourced from Hokkaido — a species native to Japan that grows especially well in the region. Plywood was chosen over solid wood because it is less prone to warping and well-suited for flat-pack furniture. 

 While TSUMIKI focused on solid wood and handcrafting, KODACHI embraces machine processing and plywood to reduce dependency on expert craftsmanship. This enables involvement from younger or new makers. Choosing plywood reflects a hope to nurture future makers and pass on Japan’s rich wood culture to the future. 

 

【About the Makers: Takizawa Plywood (Material Procurement), WOW (Processing)】 

 Takizawa Veneer Co., Ltd. (est. 1936, Ashibetsu City, Hokkaido) is a long-established manufacturer of veneer and plywood made from local hardwoods. Their signature product, Paper-Wood — colorful plywood laminated with local thinning wood and recycled paper — has received international acclaim. Embracing a philosophy of “small-lot, multi-variety production,” their use of Hokkaido’s diverse hardwoods aligns with More Trees’ approach to forest conservation — especially the concept of “creating diverse forests.” With formaldehyde-free adhesives and precise craftsmanship, they produce high-quality plywood with natural beauty. 

WOW Co., Ltd. (est. 1972, Asahikawa City, Hokkaido) is a furniture maker influenced by German system furniture, known for its precision and sensibility. With a philosophy of creating pieces that stir “surprise” and “emotion,” WOW has long played a key role in Asahikawa’s furniture industry. For KODACHI, both founder Jujiro Nohara and young makers took part in the creation of KODACHI, combining CNC machining and hand-finishing to highlight the natural beauty of the wood.
